Apple’s device, as expected, is a beauty. That spells trouble for mobile operators. The device seems to do everything, except breakfast. Like its predecessor, the iPhone, more applications will be added over time, and ultimately reduce the price, making it more desirable and pervasive. Therein lies the problem for the already pressured companies like AT & T in the U.S. and O2 in the UK.
Not that the device will explode sales. Even though the version of 16 gigawatts costing less than $ 499, most of the things that makes the iPad can make them an iPhone or netbook for a lower price. Although the sales will be warming up over time. For most people it is worth paying for the speed and utility of the device.
However, the speed may be its Achilles heel. U.S. users must use AT & T and the operator feels the push and devices like the iPhone, which is the exclusive carrier in the country. In December, the director of mobile operations at AT & T admitted that its networks in New York and San Francisco were under pressure due to increased use of smartphones.
The networks were designed for short and infrequent calls. The iPod changed the behavior as more customers used their handsets for more data-intensive functions and more frequently.
The iPad will intensify this problem because it encourages users to stream video and online games. Of course, sales will take time to accelerate, thereby giving operators to invest in their networks. Investors seem to have it. Moved up the shares of AT & T slightly. It may be a first day of vertigo. The iPad is beautiful, but can be transformed into a hideous monster for carriers.
